Congratulations to Miami Springs’ own Ashley Moon for winning the Orange Bowl Beigel-Feis-Hixon Valor Award.   According to the Orange Bowl, “The award is designed to salute an outstanding South Florida student-athlete who exhibits valor and courage in the face of adversity, and consists of a $10,000 scholarship.”  The award also honors three Marjory Stoneman Douglas coaches (Scott Beigel, Aaron Feis, Chris Hixon) who gave their lives defending students during the Valentine’s Day massacre at the Parkland school.

According to the statement from the Orange Bowl Committee, Ashley Moon had suffered early in her high school years at Miami Springs Senior High from cyber and emotional bullying.  Fortunately, she was able to courageously persevere past this dark time and achieve a 5.14 GPA while also ranking as the top seeded player on the high school tennis team, and competing in swimming, volleyball, and CrossFit.  Not to mention Ashley’s involvement with the Anchor Club, HOSA Club, Holocaust Ambassador Program, National Science Honor Society, Mock Trial Team, and much more.

Ashley’s Tennis Coach, Manny Fabian, shared with the Orange Bowl Committee that “She has been in her share of adverse moments and become better for it… participates in numerous other extra-curricular activities, while academically ranking at the top of her graduating class. I truly don’t know how she does it.”
