Councilman Jaime Petralanda announced this weekend that he’ll be running for Miami-Dade County School Board.
Petralanda is the second Miami Springs Council Member to announce a run for the County School Board. Councilwoman Mara Zapata is also running for the County School Board.
Both Council Members are in District 5. That seat is currently held by Susie Castillo, who apparently will not be running again. Castillo’s term ends in November of 2020.
Both Jaime Petralanda and Mara Zapata’s current term ends in April of 2021. Due to Florida’s Resign to Run Law, both candidates would have to give up their seats at some point in 2020 in order to run for the School Board Seat. This would create the need for a special election to fill the vacancies on the Miami Springs City Council some time in 2020.
