Hurricane Katrina hit Miami Springs on the evening of August 25, 2005. It was a Category 1 hurricane with 75 MPH maximum sustained winds.
The first half of the storm was not particularly impressive. It felt more like a tropical storm than a hurricane.
When the eye of the storm passed over Miami Springs, many of the neighbors came out to the street to experience the eerie calm that evening. We were all surprised at what little damage had occurred so far. It was both fun to experience the eye of the storm, but also a little bit worrisome as we knew the second half of the storm could be different.
The second half of the storm was much stronger and produced the winds we were expecting from a category 1 hurricane. Katrina was by no means catastrophic in Miami Springs, but it did bring down lots of tree branches and some trees throughout Miami Springs’ vast tree canopy.

Of course, when a hurricane hits in late August it means you’re dealing with power outages during the hottest time of the year. Fortunately, FPL was able to get power restored relatively quickly for a direct hit from a hurricane.
