WPLG Local 10 is reporting on the death of a beautiful Chinese Shar Pei after the 5 year old dog was left at a Miami Springs pet groomer.
According to the report, it appears the dog died of a cardiac arrest during the visit. It’s noted in the story that the dog was muzzled. Is it possible the dog overheated, possibly unable to pant because of the muzzle? No one knows.
The Miami Springs pet groomer in question was not identified in the story. Obviously, the pet owner is heart broken after losing his beautiful pet. Nobody expects to drop off their dog at the pet groomer only to come back and find out the dog has died under their care.
At this point, it does not appear that any foul play was involved and the Miami Springs Police Department has NOT filed any charges against the groomer.
We’re not dog experts, but we do want to remind folks that dogs don’t sweat. They cool off by panting. When muzzled, some dogs can’t pant properly. A dog can overheat if they can’t pant properly. Did that contribute to cardiac arrest in this case? Who knows?
Bottom line, for the sake of the pet and the pet owner, you should observe how your dog reacts to being muzzled for a period of time before trusting that experience to a third party that can’t be expected to be as attuned to your pet as you are.
