The Miami Springs Police Department arrested Perez Nuevas and Hassan Castillo with Burglary of an occupied dwelling, grand theft, possession of narcotics (meth), credit card fraud, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to Police, a hotel guest at an undisclosed Miami Springs Hotel woke up to a burglar in the room and chased the burglar out. Within 90 minutes, the victim was notified via an alert that their debit card had been used at a CVS. Miami Springs Police Officers were notified and responded to the CVS where they found a subject matching the description of the burglar along with a second subject and a third person identified as a driver.
According to Miami Springs Police, the alleged burglar seen by the victim was identified as Jose Manuel Perez Nuevas. The second subject was identified as Howard Irvin Hassan Castillo. Hassan Castillo was observed by Miami Springs Police as throwing something into the bushes and was detained. According to Police, a container with narcotics and a pipe with residue were identified as the discarded items. Miami Springs Police also identified stolen property in the back seat of the vehicle.
Miami Springs Police report that the subject had entered the hotel room several times and took multiple pieces of luggage. Hassan Castillo allegedly used the victim’s debit card to purchase over $100 worth of products from the CVS.
The driver claimed ignorance of the alleged crimes and was released after clearing a background check.
Fortunately, the alleged stolen luggage and property was returned to the hotel victim on the scene and the items purchased at the CVS were returned to the store.
This is just another example of how our Miami Springs Police Department is taxed to handle crimes of various types at the hotels along 36th Street and LeJeune instead of our residential streets. We fully support the Council’s efforts for a Hotel Bed Tax and the creation of a Nuisance Abatement Board to increase the number of officers in our community and address hotels and establishments that create an undue burden of crime for our community.
