Miami-Dade County School Board Member, Dan Espino, recently recognized Springview Elementary for being designated a 2024-2025 Florida Schools of Excellence award winner.
What is a Florida Schools of Excellence Designation?
Florida Statute requires the State Board to designate a school as a School of Excellence if the school’s percentage of possible points earned in its school grade calculation is in the top 20% for schools comprised of the same grade groupings (elementary, middle, high and combination) for at least two of the last three school years.
According to the Florida Department of Education, for 2024-2025, 744 schools were designated as a School of Excellence across 49 school districts. Of these schools, 386 maintained their designation, 304 renewed their designation and 54 were newly designated.
A School of Excellence has the following administrative flexibilities outlined in law:
- Exemption from any provision of law or rule that expressly requires a minimum period of daily or weekly instruction in reading;
- Principal autonomy as provided under section 1012.28(8), Florida Statutes;
- Instructional personnel may substitute one school year of employment at a School of Excellence for 20 inservice points, up to 60 inservice points total in a five-year cycle, toward the renewal of a professional educator certificate;
- Exemption from compliance with school district policies or procedures establishing times for the start and end of the school day; and
- Calculation of class size compliance based on the average number of students at the school level.
Springview Elementary Ranks in Top 5% Statewide
According to the Florida Department of Education’s scoring, Springview Elementary, located at 1122 Bluebird Avenue in Miami Springs’ bird section, had a final percentile rank of 95.5. That places Springview Elementary amongst the Top 5% of elementary schools across the entire State of Florida.
