In 2015 we warned you that the new Miami Springs pool was going to be much smaller than the grand olympic sized pool we had for over 50 years. We also informed you that much of the money was going into creating more buildings. In other words, more building space. Less pool space. Now you can see the construction of the new pool with your own eyes. Total construction cost: $5 MILLION.
Lots of history in this June 18, 1924 photo. It shows of a Curtiss Jenny airplane in flight over the almost completed Curtiss-Bright Administration Building in Glenn Curtiss’s new development of Country Club Estates (now Miami Springs). Pilot Adrew Heermance from the Florida Aviation Camp on Palm Ave in Hialeah was flying an Underwood and Underwood Company photographer over the area to create an aero map. The map was to be used in planning the development. Glenn Curtiss stated that he “would not think of planning an improvement in this country on a large acreage without first having an aero map.
The name “Country Club Estates” was first used in newspaper advertisements June 18th.
The aero map photography was completed by June 25th. The Curtiss Bright Administration was completed in July. The Administration Building was located at what is now the north west corner of Hook Square and Canal St in Miami Springs. Notice the totem pole in the lower right of the photo. This one of two that marked the entrance to the Hialeah Zoo across the street. Clay blocks salvaged from the Administration Building along with photos and information are now on display in our museum on East Drive in Miami Springs and in the Miami Springs Adult Community Center on Apache Drive.
