1926 Michael & Wheeler Insurance Agency in Country Club Estates (Photo courtesy Miami Springs Historical Society and Museum.)

This September 1926 photo identifies the location(notice the sign) of the J. A. Michael & Sayre Wheeler Insurance and Real Estate Company as being on the southeast corner on the first floor of the First State Bank of Hialeah. The bank was located on the first block of The Parkway(Curtiss Parkway)in Country Club Estates (Miami Springs).  Apple Dental Group now occupies that location. H. Sayre Wheeler was the son of Monroe Wheeler, an old friend and business associate of Glenn Curtiss. He became president of the Curtiss Aero Car Company in Opa locka and served at the 2nd mayor of Opa locka in the late 1920’s. After Curtiss’ death in 1930 Wheeler marred the widow Lena Curtiss. He succeeded Carl Adams as mayor of Miami Springs in 1942 and served until 1944. The couple lived in the Curtiss Mansion until 1950. J. A. Michael & his wife Minnie we’re close friends of Glenn Curtiss & lived at 27 Hunting Lodge Drive. The home was one of the first to be built in the city. We have a metal J.A. Michael Real Estate sign on display in our museum on East Drive.
