At Monday’s Special City Council Meeting, the City Council, in a split 4-1 vote, approved the second reading of an ordinance that expands the allowable businesses on the ground floor of the Gateway Overlay District to also include Gymnasiums, Health Clubs, Dance Studios or other centers where physical activity lessons are conducted.

For the record, here’s how your Council voted on this ordinance:

  • Councilman Jorge Santin:  NO
  • Councilman Joseph Dion:  YES
  • Councilman Orlando Lamas:  YES
  • Councilman Fabian Perez-Crespo:  YES
  • Mayor Walter Fajet:  YES

OPINION:
As we said before, we love having gyms and health clubs in Miami Springs and don’t have a particular problem with gyms being added within the Gateway Overlay District.  We’re just pointing out that we’re not getting what we were sold by the pre-COVID politicians and administration that sold us the whole Gateway Overlay District creation.  The prior city management and politicians are all gone now, and as expected, we’re still dealing with the predictable mess they created.
