Coyote Safety Tips for Miami Springs Residents
Coyotes are a natural part of South Floridaās wildlifeāand in recent years, Miami Springs residents may spot them moving through neighborhoods, especially at dawn and dusk. While coyotes are generally shy and avoid people, a little awareness goes a long way in keeping everyone safe.
What to know: Coyotes are curious and opportunistic. Theyāre most active at night and early morning and are often drawn to easy food sourcesāpet food left outdoors, unsecured trash, or fallen fruit.
How to prevent encounters:
-
Secure attractants: Lock trash cans, clean up fallen fruit, and never feed wildlife.
-
Protect pets: Keep cats indoors, supervise small dogs, and use a leashāespecially after dark.
-
Be confident if you see one: Stand tall, make yourself look bigger, clap your hands, and calmly back away. Donāt run.
-
Hazings work: Loud noises or waving your arms can reinforce their natural fear of humans.
-
Report bold behavior: If a coyote lingers or approaches people, notify local animal services or the Miami Springs Police Department.
Coyotes arenāt looking for troubleātheyāre adapting to urban life. By removing attractants and staying alert, Miami Springs can coexist safely with our wild neighbors while keeping people and pets protected. Stay safe, stay informed, and look out for one another.
