Today, May 9, 2025, we celebrate Law Enforcement Appreciation Day — and there’s no better way to honor it than with a story of heart and humanity from right here in our community.

When a local business called the Virginia Gardens Police Department about a possible trespasser, Officer Masnata responded. But instead of jumping to conclusions, he quickly recognized that the individual had a mental disability.

What happened next speaks volumes.

Rather than making an arrest, Officer Masnata brought the man to the station and contacted his family to ensure he got home safely. While waiting, the man shared a dream — he wanted to be a police officer. So Officer Masnata handed him a police sticker, and his face lit up with joy. They even took a photo together to capture the moment.

We’re grateful for Officer Masnata’s compassion, professionalism, and presence of mind. He saw a person, not a problem — and that made all the difference.

Thank you, Officer Masnata, and thank you to the entire Virginia Gardens Police Department for continuing to make us #VGProud.
