Growing up in this area, I don’t really remember kids riding their bikes to get to South Hialeah Elementary School. It wasn’t until I attended Miami Springs Middle School that I saw large numbers of kids riding their bicycles to school.

Then, at Miami Springs Senior High, there were always a few kids who rode their bikes to school, but it was never very many. It wasn’t cool to ride a bike to high school when your friends could drive a car to school.

However, Springview Elementary has gone all in on supporting kids who ride their bikes to school. You see, every Friday there’s a “Bike Bus” that comes to Springview Elementary.

What’s a bike bus you ask?
It’s not a bus in the traditional sense. Think of it more as an organized (and supervised) pack of students that ride to school together every Friday. Think of the bus more as the organization and supervision of the student bikers.

The Springview Elementary students meet at the Miami Springs Rec Center parking lot every Friday morning on their bikes…oftentimes accompanied by a parent also riding a bike. Then, once all the students have arrived at the Rec Center, they depart and ride towards Hammond Drive until they reach Springview Elementary.
Thanks to Miami Springs’ quiet and friendly streets, that makes it safe for kids to ride their bikes to school, the Bike Bus has grown. In fact, it’s grown so much, WSVN Channel 7 will reportedly join the Bike Bus this Friday.
The meetup will occur this Friday at 7:45 am at the Miami Springs Recreation Center (1401 Westward Drive).
