Traffic Stop Yields: $40k Cash, Drugs, and Handgun

Miami Springs Police have been busy with drug busts on traffic stops.  Yesterday was no different.  On Monday, October 11, 2021, a Miami Springs Police Officer assigned to the Crime Suppression Team stopped a vehicle for allegedly having illegally dark window tints.

According to Miami Springs Police, the driver of the vehicle was identified as Larry Welch, Jr. (26 years old).  According to the Police, Welch admitted to having a suspended driver’s license.  He also reportedly informed the police that he had a handgun under the driver’s seat.

Miami Springs Police identified the gun as a Glock 9mm that had a 30 round magazine.  For the record, there’s nothing illegal about owning a Glock 9mm with a 30 round magazine, but you need to have a Concealed Carry license to carry in the manner Welch is reported to have had the gun.  Furthermore, even with the license, it’s illegal to possess the weapon while committing another crime.

K-9 units arrived on the scene and the K-9 Officer reportedly alerted Police to the odor of narcotics from the trunk.  With the dog providing probable cause, a search was conducted of the vehicle’s trunk.  There, police allegedly found a shoe box with over $40,000 in cash.

A follow up search of the interior of the vehicle also produced 5 marijuana baggies according to Police.

Larry Welch, Jr. was charged with:

• Possession with intent to distribute cannabis while armed
• Possession of a weapon while committing an offense
• Driving while license suspended with knowledge
