Hialeah Country Club Estates 1927 (Photo courtesy Miami Springs Historical Society and Museum.)

Lots to see in this rare 1927 photo looking southeast from the top of the flagpole in Triangle Park at Palm Ave. & Okeechobee Rd. in Hialeah.

Hialeah

Hialeah policeman Roy Ewing was getting ready to paint the flagpole when he snapped this photo. A year earlier, Ewing had installed Hialeah’s first fire alarm system. Ewing later became Hialeah Police Chief and Fire Chief.

In the lower right is the empty bear cage. The bears had been moved to the Hialeah Zoo bear pit on the south side of the canal in 1924 and then to the Opa-locka Zoo when it opened in 1926. The 30-foot-tall Seminole Indian sign, constructed in 1921 on the Hialeah side of the canal between the bridge and Palm Ave, no longer stands.

Country Club Estates

The Hialeah First State Bank can be seen in the upper right. The Apple Dental Group now occupies that location. The Clune Engineering Building (now Paco’s Way) and the Curtiss Bright Administration Building are visible to the left of the bank.

The Warren Pony Swing Bridge, constructed in 1924, crosses the canal with its shadow below. The bridge tender’s house is seen on the Hialeah side of the bridge. This historic bridge is still in use today.
