Trucks continue to ignore the NO THRU TRUCKS signs in Miami Springs. We continue to see 18 wheelers entering Miami Springs despite the NO THRU TRUCKS signs, so why does this continue to happen?
A few years back, we shared this video of an 18 wheeler that was stuck trying to enter Miami Springs at Curtiss Parkway.
Are truckers ignoring the NO THRU TRUCK sign?
Well, put yourself in their shoes. I don’t think they’re purposefully trying to violate the NO THRU TRUCK signs. Rather, by the time the truck driver sees the NO THRU TRUCK sign at the incoming bridge at Curtiss Parkway, they’re already midway through intersection at Okeechobee Road. Just look below. Do you see any indication for a truck driver that cannot continue on the left two lanes leading to Miami Springs?
Seems like the easy solution is to add NO THRU TRUCK signs on Hialeah Drive. If the left two lanes that say MIAMI SPRINGS also said NO THRU TRUCKS we’d reduce the problem. This would give truckers advanced notice that they have to move over to the right lane and continue along US Highway 27 aka Okeechobee Road. This would require coordination with FDOT as Hialeah Drive is a State Road. State Road 944 to be exact.
That’s not the only opportunity for improvement. Eastbound Okeechobee Road (US-27) has no sign whatsoever to alert truckers that they cannot make a right turn into Miami Springs. Placing a sign where the right turn lane begins, would give truckers an early opportunity to change their plan to make a right hand turn over the bridge.
These are simple fixes that can be handled by the Florida Department of Transportation. We just need some squeaking to happen to let the FDOT apply the grease.
