Quick COVID numbers from the State of Florida:

  • NEW CASES LAST WEEK:  198,719 down from 430,015 2 weeks ago
  • COVID DEATHS LAST WEEK:  206 fatalities up from 140 the prior week

As you can see in the chart above, we’re on the downward slope of the winter COVID-19 surge.  Of course, despite the sky high infection numbers, fatalities have not jumped into the thousands per week.  In fact, last week we had 206 COVID fatalities.  Obviously, we don’t want to see anyone die from COVID.  Especially when we have the COVID shot that has proven effective and preventing deaths.  Plus, we also have much better treatments today for those who do get infected like monoclonal antibody treatments.

We’re also seeing a downward trend on the Case Fatality Rates by age group.  The only age group with over a 1 percent case fatality rate are those over 60 years old.  And we’ve seen the 65+ case fatality drop from over 9% to 7%.  In other words, between the COVID shots (commonly referred to as a vaccine), the less deadly OMICRON variant, and better medical treatment, the numbers have definitely improved.
