Veterans Day is one of America’s most enduring national observances, but its roots stretch back more than a century to a moment of global significance. Understanding the history of this holiday provides important context for why it continues to hold deep meaning today—especially in a community like Miami Springs, where service and civic pride are part of the local identity.
Origins in the Aftermath of World War I
The story begins on November 11, 1918. At 11:00 a.m., the guns of World War I fell silent as the Allied nations and Germany signed the Armistice that ended the fighting. The “11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month” became a symbol of peace after one of the most devastating conflicts in human history.
In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as Armistice Day, a time for Americans to reflect on the heroism of those who served in what was then called the “war to end all wars.” Over time, ceremonies, parades, moments of silence, and public gatherings became part of the national tradition.
From Armistice Day to Veterans Day
Following World War II and the Korean War, Americans recognized that millions of additional service members had served in defense of the nation. The holiday needed to honor not only the veterans of one war, but all who had worn the uniform.
In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation officially changing the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day, expanding the day’s purpose to honor veterans of every branch, every era, and every conflict. From that point forward, November 11 became a national expression of gratitude to all who served.
National Traditions Take Shape
Throughout the decades, Veterans Day observances grew across the country. Communities hosted parades, schools organized educational programs, and Americans placed flags at cemeteries and memorials. The focal point of the national ceremony developed at Arlington National Cemetery, where each year leaders gather for a wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier—a symbol of sacrifice made on behalf of the nation.
Despite temporary changes in date during the 1970s, Veterans Day returned to its historic November 11 observance in 1978, preserving the meaning of the original armistice.
Today, the City of Miami Springs will be hosting a Veterans Day ceremony at 9am at the War Memorial on Curtiss Parkway.
