During Tuesday’s Miami-Dade County Board of County Commission Meeting’s discussion over the proposal to expand the TGK facility, the County continued to stress that it was not an expansion, but a replacement.
While that is technically true, the county would be closing down a downtown facility and replacing that facility with an expanded facility in our back yard. While the county as a whole would not be expanding its total jail facility, it would represent an expanded jail facility in our back yard.
As far as Miami Springs and Virginia Gardens and Medley and Doral residents are concerned, this is a HUGE expansion in our backyard.
Commissioner Rebeca Sosa was clear that she would object to any expansion at TGK. “I will never support what you are proposing right there.”
Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz also objected to the expansion at TGK. He called out how this “report” was very site specific and was very concerned that an RFP might be coming around the corner. He further demanded the County administration to provide alternative options to the TGK location.
After much discussion and debate, a motion was passed to defer the item to the first Miami-Dade County Board of Commissioners meeting in June.
