April 15 – Oct. 31, 1980: Mariel Boat Lift
The Mariel boatlift saw a mass exodus of Cubans flee the communist nation in search of freedom in the United States. The vast majority ended in South Florida with a high concentration ending up in our neighboring city of Hialeah. Many of the young “Marielitos” would attend school at local schools including Miami Springs Junior High and Miami Springs Senior High.

1986: Millard-McCarty House Added to National Registry
Located at 424 Hunting Lodge Drive, the two-story Pueblo Revival-style house with a U-shape was completed around 1926.

1986:
Miami Springs Junior High becomes Miami Springs Middle School
For the 1986-1987 school year, Miami Springs Junior High, which used to have kids from 7th grade through 9th grade, changed to become Miami Springs Middle School handling grades from 6th grade to 8th grade. Miami Springs Senior High added the 9th graders that used to attend Junior High.
1987: Miami Springs Historical Society Founded
The Miami Springs Historical Society was founded in 1987 to preserve the early history of our beautiful community. Today, the Historical Society has expanded to feature a museum at Stafford Park.
1987: Miami Springs Senior High Closed – Asbestos
Back in 1987, Miami Springs Senior High was closed due to high levels of asbestos found at the school. As a results, the students were forced to go to school at Hialeah High. Hialeah High students would attend a shortened schedule from 7am to noon. Springs students would attend classes from 1:15pm to 5:40pm.

1989: Eastern Airlines Strike / Bankruptcy
Why so many Eastern Airlines employees lived in Miami Springs

Eastern’s long-running labor/financial issues culminated in the 1989 strike, a nationally significant disruption with direct impact in Miami where Eastern was deeply rooted.

Eastern ultimately entered bankruptcy in 1989 (and ceased operations later, in 1991), but the major “event” of the 1980s is the 1989 collapse/strike moment.
- The bankruptcy and ultimate demise of Eastern Airlines impacted many Miami Springs residents who were employed by the major South Florida employer.
