Former Miami Springs Mayor, Maria Mitchell, is one of just two candidates who applied online to replace Kevin Cabrera as County Commissioner according to a report by Douglas Hanks of The Miami Herald.

According to the report, it appears the County Commission is seeking to appoint Cabrera’s successor.

We are thrilled to see former Mayor Maria Mitchell vying for the County Commission seat as she would bring a cool and calm voice to the County. Furthermore, she would be an amazing representative not only for Miami Springs and Virginia Gardens, but also parts of Hialeah, unincorporated parts of Miami-Dade County, Flagami, Coral Gables, and West Miami.
According to the report, Natalie Milian Orbis, a West Miami commissioner, is the only other candidate that applied for the open County Commission seat.

You’ll remember that Kevin Cabrera voted against Miami Springs and Virginia Gardens annexation attempts. And Cabrera championed the effort to sell county owned property to a developer for a “nominal sum.”

I think it’s safe to say that Maria Mitchell would have Miami Springs and Virginia Gardens residents’ interests at heart if she were to become the next County Commissioner. We wish her good luck.
Hopefully she doesn’t get caught up with the county politics that’s a different level.
Best of luck.
