It’s official. Miami Springs Senior High has officially transformed into the Miami Springs 6-12 Preparatory Academy or “Miami Springs Prep” for short.

Earlier this week, there was a ceremonial unveiling of the new Miami Springs Prep sign marking the change. Among the attendees was Miami-Dade County Public Schools Board Member and Miami Springs resident, Dan Espino, who championed for the change. Other attendees included Florida State Senator, Miami Springs residents, and MSSH alum, Bryan Avila, Florida State Representative Alex Rizo, Miami Springs Assistant City Manager Omar Luna, and Miami Springs Senior High (ahem) Miami Springs Prep Academy Principal Nelson Gonzalez.
As you know, Miami Springs Middle School was permanently closed this past June due to shrinking enrollment. Those 6-8th grade classes are now being offered at the Miami Springs Senior High campus…now called Miami Springs Prep.

The numbers don’t lie. This isn’t the environment from the late 90s when most of the Doral kids were coming to school at Miami Springs Senior High and MSSH was suffering from overcrowding. This is the complete opposite. As new schools opened in Doral, the kids who lived in Doral stopped coming to Miami Springs. That provided an initial relief. But then came all the charter school options and school vouchers for private schools. That provided parents with a lot more options. And the parents voted and enrolled their kids at other schools. While sad, there was clearly no other choice but to merge Miami Springs Middle School and Miami Springs Senior High into one school.
So while the sign unveiling was celebrated and everyone’s hyping the new school year (as they should) there’s still a part of me that feels sad that we lost a part of Miami Springs history.
