The following is a letter submitted to the Miami Springs City Council, Miami Springs Mayor, and MiamiSprings.com:
Dear Mayor Fajet and City Council Members,
I am writing to bring an urgent public safety concern to your attention regarding the catwalk near the high school. While this structure serves a great purpose in helping students safely cross the canal to get to school, it has increasingly become a vulnerability for our neighborhood at night.
Unfortunately, criminals are using the unmonitored catwalk as a discreet access route under cover of darkness to enter our community and commit crimes. Just last night, multiple vehicles were broken into, and attempts were made on several others along Raven Avenue and Swallow Drive. Neighbors are deeply concerned about the escalating property damage and the potential risk to personal safety.
To protect both our residents and the safety of the students who rely on this path daily, we respectfully request that the city install a municipal security camera and improved lighting at the catwalk access points. A camera in this location would serve as a vital deterrent, assist local police with investigation efforts, and help restore some peace of mind to our neighborhood.
Thank you for your time, dedication to our community, and prompt attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Concerned Resident
Miami Springs, Florida
The Miami Springs Police Department does credit the traffic cameras as a major factor in closing criminal cases and reducing crime in our neighborhood.
A camera at this position would definitely help police identify suspects who are fleeing on foot, bicycles, scooters, etc. through the quickest getaway in Miami Springs. About 10-15 years ago, I had a Miami Springs Police Officer stop me near this catwalk and asked if I had seen a certain suspect. It just so happens I did see an individual matching the description the police were looking for. And I explained how he rode his bike up the catwalk and towards Hialeah.
We support this idea as a way to support law enforcement and deter crime.
What do you think? Should we encourage the Miami Springs Police Department to place cameras at the catwalk?
