The folks at CIMA Medical Center have shared some tips to help parents with the growing problem of social media addiction in children.

BECOME A ROLE MODEL

Ensure you are not walking the addiction road yourself, or already an addict.  Kids will follow what you do 1000% more than what you say.  So, if you’re constantly addicted to the phone, it’s time to put it down and show by example.

SEEK ALTERNATIVES TO SOCIAL MEDIA

It is important to find out if boredom is the reason your child is addicted to social media to the extremes. This is one of the major reasons children readily embrace technology.

As kids boredom led to creativity.  We came up with things to do and games to play to pass the time.  Now, when kids are bored, they immediately reach down to their phones.

Sports and clubs are great ways to force them to put the phone down and let their brain engage in something other than a digital screen.  You can’t play basketball while holding onto a smartphone.

ENFORCE FAMILY ROUTINES

The lack of a structure that guides home routines is often what leads to youngsters doing whatever they want.

Something as simple as a family dinner with no phones present (parents included) sets a routine for family discussion and the sharing of values.

OPT FOR PEP-TALK AND SMALL TREATS

As a parent, make it a point to sit down with your child and discuss the good and bad in social media overuse. Get him/her to understand that these platforms are double-edged swords by big corporationss, aimed at promoting themselves for financial and other gains.
