Let’s build hotels they said. It’ll bring in tax revenues they said. It’ll benefit the community they said. It’ll be a net positive for Miami Springs they said. Well here’s another example of the negatives of the NW 36th Street Hotels: Miami Springs Police announced the arrest of Jamey Edward McNeil who was charged with Human Trafficking, Deriving Support from Prostitution, Renting a Space for Prostitution, and Directing Another to a Place of Prostitution.
According to Miami Springs Police, Officers responded to a local hotel regarding a call of verbal threats. The officers spoke with the alleged victim which police believe had been coerced into prostitution by Jamey Edward McNeil. According to Miami Springs Police, the alleged victim was transported to the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office Human Trafficking Task Force and provided a statement to the task force.
According to the statement from the Miami Springs Police Department, the alleged victim was being coerced into sexual activities with 3 – 4 men per day. Miami Springs Police allege that the female was given methamphetamines to get her to work longer. Furthermore, McNeil is alleged to have kept the majority of the prostitution income. The victim allegedly expressed fear of McNeil and pressure to continue. She is alleged to claim that McNeil provided her food, clothing, and manicure treatments. Police claim that the victim felt she was in a “relationship with McNeil and that she loved him.”
The good news is that Miami Springs Police is doing its part to help clean out NW 36th Street. The bad news is that the residents are paying for this police work. And every time police are responding to hotel crimes, there are less police enforcing our residential streets. And as you can see in some of the other crime incidents reported today, the hotel crimes don’t just stay at the hotels and can sometimes lead to crimes in our residential areas.
