The Miami Springs City Council unanimously approved on second reading the passing of a new ordinance that will “authorize the placement, installation, and operation of speed detection systems on roadways maintained as school zones.” In other words, if you speed in a school zone in Miami Springs there’s a good chance you’ll receive a ticket in the mail even if a police officer didn’t pull you over.  That’s because a combination License Plate Reader, camera system, and speed detection system (radar or laser) will be used to identify and ticket speeders every day.

This puts speed enforcement on steroids in Miami Springs.  Miami Springs’ new Police Chief, Jimmy Deal, described it as a force multiplier.

Furthermore, the speed detection system will also act as an ALPR or Automated License Plate Reader which helps to identify vehicles wanted in connection with some type of crime.

There are always concerns over privacy and big brother, but the reality is that the Miami Springs Police Department has shown to use the ALPR systems as intended…To fight crime.  We applaud Chief Deal’s efforts to address the most common complaint we see from residents…the speeding.

Recently we shared a study conducted by the City of Miami Springs that showed up to 80% of drivers were speeding in some of the school zones by 10 MPH or greater.  In other words, the data backs up what residents have been saying.  However, residents should also look in the mirror as much of the speeding comes from our own residents.  So don’t be surprised if you receive a speeding ticket from the City of Miami Springs in the mail.
