The City of Miami Springs and the Village of Virgina Gardens celebrated Arbor Day last week.  You see, when Arbor Day rolls around, it’s more than just a date on the calendar—it’s a call to action to appreciate, protect, and expand our urban canopies. While many of us might simply enjoy the shade of an old oak or the bright blooms of a flowering tree on this special day, several of our local municipalities are actually required to get their hands dirty to maintain a prestigious title.

Created by the Arbor Day Foundation, the Tree City USA program provides the framework for community forestry management. For a city or town to earn and keep this leafy badge of honor, they must meet four core standards. One of those critical requirements? Hosting an official Arbor Day observance and reading a public proclamation. In practice, this means participating municipalities must actively celebrate the holiday, which almost universally includes the ceremonial and practical act of planting a tree.

Take Miami Springs and the Village of Virginia Gardens, for example. Both communities pride themselves on their lush, beautiful neighborhoods and have committed to the Tree City USA standards. To maintain their status, local leaders and residents in these areas come together every Arbor Day to read the official proclamation and plant new trees.

This isn’t just bureaucratic red tape; it’s a living, breathing commitment to the environment. By mandating an annual Arbor Day celebration and tree planting, the Tree City USA program ensures that cities like Miami Springs and Virginia Gardens are continually replenishing their green spaces, improving air quality, and making their streets more beautiful for future generations.

So, the next time you drive through Miami Springs or Virginia Gardens and admire the beautiful canopy overhead, remember that it didn’t happen by accident. It is the result of a dedicated, year-after-year commitment to Arbor Day and the enduring promise to always plant for tomorrow.

Earlier this month, the Village proudly marked the occasion with a special tree planting ceremony led by Virginia Gardens Beautification Board President Hector Martinez and Board Member Jaime Fierro. During the ceremony, an Orange Geiger tree was planted—adding a beautiful and vibrant touch to our community landscape.

Councilman Michael Tur read Mayor Spencer Deno IV’s proclamation, officially declaring April 16, 2026 as Arbor Day in the Village of Virginia Gardens.

Mayor Spencer Deno IV, the entire Village Council, Chief Ray Hernandez, and Public Works Director Lazaro Garaboa were in attendance, showing their continued support for keeping our community green and beautiful.

We appreciate the efforts of our Beautification Board and all those who help preserve and enhance the natural beauty of our Village—today and every day.
