On Thursday, April 20th, at around 2:30pm, the City of Miami Springs announced the closure of the East Drive Bridge at the Miami River due to heavy police presence. Miami-Dade Homicide was involved which usually means there’s a dead body. That lead to some speculation that it might be a murder or suicide.
According to the Miami-Dade Police Public Information Office, the Police recovered the body of an adult male, possibly homeless, from the area around East Drive and the Miami River Canal. According to the Police, foul play is not suspected at this time. Early indications point to a possible suicide in this case.
The name, age, race, and other identification was not yet released to the public. The Police prefer to make contact with next of kin before releasing the information to the public.
No word if the individual was living under the bridge.
By late afternoon, the East Drive Bridge had reopened to normal traffic.
Unfortunately, there has been a long track record of finding bodies in and around our waterways:
Back in 2020 police found a body in a canal just west of Miami Springs.
In 2019, there were two different incidents of a body found in the Miami Canal:
Back in 2014, a woman was found dead near Curtiss Parkway in the Canal.
We’ll have to ask Miami Springs Historian, Ken Wilde, to find the history of other people found in the Miami Canal over the years. Unfortunately, we suspect there are a few to be found.
As a reminder, if you see anything suspicious, please contact the Miami Springs Police Department at 305.888.9711.
