According to WSVN 7, five students were sickened after ingesting edibles at Miami Springs Elementary. According to the report, one child was hospitalized. We noticed this Miami-Dade Fire Rescue speeding away from the scene, presumably with one child that was being hospitalized.
There was heavy police presence from both Miami-Dade Public Schools Police and Miami Springs Police at Miami Springs Elementary this afternoon. According to WSVN 7, one of the students brought an edible to the after school program at Miami Springs Elementary. That’s where the edible was shared among the reported five students.
Concerned parents could be seen gathered at the scene after what must have been a traumatic event for the students, after school staff, and the parents.
While the investigation is ongoing, let’s be blunt for a moment. These are elementary aged students. They are not going out and buying edibles. It is likely, albeit unproven at this point, that one of the students brought the edible from home. Either from a parent or an elder family member (cousin, older sibling, uncle, etcetera). Folks, if you’re an adult and are taking edibles and you have small children, frankly, shame on you. At least have the decency to keep them away from small children.
Parents, please reinforce with your children never to eat “chocolate” or “treats” from a friend. It’s sad to say this as we normally want to encourage young children to share, but unfortunately, in a world where kids are bringing edibles to school, you can’t be too safe.
We pray the one child that was being hospitalized recovers quickly.
Again, please take the time to talk to your children about this incident. Let them know the dangers of drugs. Let them know that drugs can be mixed into treats such as brownies.
For those of you wondering, “Why is there a helicopter hovering overhead?” This was the reason.
