📜 History of Flag Day

  • June 14, 1777: The Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating:
“Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”
This established the first official national flag—what we now call the Stars and Stripes.

  • 1885: A Wisconsin teacher named Bernard J. Cigrand is credited with proposing the idea of Flag Day. He held a celebration with his students and campaigned for a national observance.

  • 1916: President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation establishing June 14 as National Flag Day, though it was not yet officially recognized by Congress.

  • 1949: President Harry S. Truman signed an Act of Congress that officially designated June 14 as National Flag Day.
