Yes.  Miami Springs has Peacocks.

And Peahens, too.

The species is actually a Peafowl.  The males are the Peacocks and the females are the Peahens.  The male Peacocks are the more colorful of the two in an attempt to gain breeding rights with the Peahens.

How did the Peafowl get here?

Who knows? What we do know is that there has been a healthy population in Key Biscayne, Coconut Grove, South Miami, and other local neighborhoods.  It’s no surprise that some would end up in beautiful Miami Springs.

They are considered an invasive species (like iguanas, muscovy ducks, Egyptian geese, etc.).  However, just like the muscovy ducks, the Peafowl are protected as Miami Springs is a bird sanctuary.  In other words, you can’t trap, capture, kill or harm them.

Where are the Peacocks?

The Peafowl are not dispersed throughout the entirety of Miami Springs.  We’ve heard of sightings in the Bird Section of Miami Springs.  However, we’ve been able to consistently spot and photograph the beautiful birds in the area of Rosedale Drive near Pine Avenue.

The birds can be spotted hanging out sometimes in a residential front yard.

Other times, we’ve spotted them atop roofs or perched on a fence.

The Peahen is not considered a threat to people.  However, they have been known to attact their reflection when they see themselves aside your beautiful car.  Many cars have been damaged in Miami from a Peacock clawing at the reflection of itself.

We have not received any complaints of that happening here in Springs, but it’s probably only a matter of time.

Some folks complain that they can be loud.  And that’s true.  They can be loud.  But I don’t think they’re any louder than the cries from our local parrots or the hammering of a woodpecker.

Personally, I enjoy seeing the beautiful birds in our community.  However, I don’t think anyone wants to see the Peafowl population proliferating to the point where they become a nuisance.

As an example, we all thought the iguanas were cool to see back in the late ’90s.  30 years later, and the iguanas are everywhere in Miami Springs.  They defecate every where from your backyard pool to your driveway.  They dig holes and many believe iguanas have become a invasive pest.
