Miami Springs residents rejected a referendum that would increase the term of the Miami Springs Mayor and City Council from two years to four years.

The vote was 54.56% NO and 45.44% YES.

This is the second time in the last 12 years that residents rejected the effort.  Back in August 14, 2012, the City of Miami Springs held a special election to amend the City Charter to change the terms of office for all Council members, excluding Mayor, from 2 to 4 year terms.  The residents of Miami Springs overwhelmingly voted NO.  We’re talking 1,180 NO votes to 678 YES votes.  That was 64% of the Miami Springs voters clearly stating they were not in favor of extending the terms of the Council Members.

This time around, the ballot question came up during a presidential election and had far greater voter participation with 6,730 voters responding to the question.  Overall, 3,672 voters selected NO.  While 3,058 residents voted YES.  That’s 614 more residents that voted NO.

Election Day Votes:

  • 904 YES
  • 1,107 NO

Early Voting:

  • 1,421 YES
  • 1,506 NO

Mail in Voting:

  • 733 YES
  • 1,059 NO

We recommend that the City Council add a referendum to the April ballot to move the Miami Springs municipal election to either the August primary or November general election date.  We believe this cost saving move will have a positive response from the community.  Keep it every two years, but move it so it coincides with a broader Miami-Dade election.
