On November 28th at approximately 10:45pm, a motorcyclist (Eric Colon Ortiz 29) was heading westbound on NW 36th Street in Miami Springs when he was hit by a pickup truck that turned directly in front of his motorcycle.
According to the Miami Springs Police Department, the victim, Eric Colon Ortiz, suffered injuries to his left leg, ankle and shoulder. He was transported to Ryder Trauma Center by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
As you’ll see in the video, the pickup driver immediately left the scene of the accident.
On the very next day, the Miami Springs Police Department received a request for a crash report by Marie Elena Menendez, 55. She claimed that “she struck a trash can or ‘something like that'” near the intersection of Sheridan Drive and NW 36th Street. The same location as the prior day’s hit and run accident.
Miami Springs Police Detective R. Barrios met with Menendez and began his investigation. After reviewing the red light camera video and information he reviewed during his investigation, Officer Barrios determined that Menendez was driving the pickup truck that struck Colon Ortiz and fled from the scene.
Marie Elena Menendez was arrested on December 3rd.
The victim, Eric Colon Ortiz, remains in the hospital at this time.
