In a report filed by Theo Karantsalis in the Miami Herald, the opening of the new $5 million Miami Springs swimming pool may be delayed past Labor Day. The article highlights a memo from Lunacon Construction Group stating, “The allowable contract time should be modified by 100 calendar days resulting in a final completion date of September 6, 2016.”
If indeed the grand opening of the new pool is pushed to Labor Day, it will represent the second summer Miami Springs kids will be without a community pool. Worst of all, this was unnecessary. The City of Miami Springs had the option to keep the old Olympic sized pool operational. The new pool construction is being done on the site of the old pool`s parking lot.
In other words, the old pool could have still been open while simultaneously building the new pool. In fact, that`s the way it was planned and implied in many of the new pool planning meetings.
Instead, kids who participate on the club swim team have migrated to Hialeah`s Milander pool or are not swimming at all. Furthermore, the closing of the pool last year killed what remained of Miami Springs Senior High aquatics.
