SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM KARL BITHORN
Help make it happen!
Shelly Dunkel Field is in dire need of a new scoreboard and the Miami Springs – Virginia Gardens Optimist Club is taking donations to make it happen.
The 2019 Golden Hawks Baseball team enjoyed a historic season this year, reaching the state final four for the first time ever. As a 1972 baseball alum, I felt the pride of being a Golden Hawk.
Before the game while I was parking, I ran across Shelly Dunkel himself who was at the game recognizing how special a day it was. Unfortunately, the mid-afternoon heat was too much for him and he was forced to leave early for health reasons.
Then it hit me when I sat down and looked into right field. A nice scoreboard that had once been there was long gone, an old and withered sign with the Coca Cola logos on either side along with the name of the field the only thing on the left.
That was so disheartening, and I could only imagine what was going through “Coach Dunk’s” mind when he looked out there and saw that.
Dunkel is a member of the Miami Springs Athletics Hall of Fame as one of the first inductees to go in in 2014 and he deserves better.
So I would like to reach out to all Golden Hawks baseball alum or anyone else in the community for financial help in purchasing and installing a new scoreboard.
If you are interested in donating in any way you can, donations will go to the Miami Springs – Virginia Gardens Optimist Club. The Club is a non-profit 501(c)(3) so all donations are tax deductible. The Club will purchase the scoreboard with all donations and then donate the rest to the school baseball field.
If we make this happen, we can all be very proud of our Golden Hawks Baseball Team! If you need to contact me for more information, call 305-318-6995.
