The quiet bird section of Miami Springs was alerted to a problem by the continuous honking from a car.  A quick look outside and it was evident there was a problem.  A car was on fire.

A Miami Springs man was driving a unique and classic Marcos GT Saturday night.  (The Marcos GT is a gorgeous British two seater with a fiberglass body. Watch Jay Leno’s Garage review a 1971 Marcos GT below.)  He was just a few feet from getting home when his partner, who was driving behind him, noticed that the Marcos GT was leaking fuel.  Fortunately, she laid on the horn to alert the man of a problem.  Unfortunately, it appears a fuel line may have disconnected which began spewing fuel and caused the sports car to. catch on fire.

Fortunately, the driver was able to get out of the car without a scratch before the car became fully engulfed in flames.

The car didn’t do too well as the engine compartment erupted in flames.

Miami Springs Police and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived in less than a couple of minutes.  The Police blocked off the roads and Fire Rescue worked on putting the fire out.

This was a traditional car fire and the single fire engine was able to put out the flames quickly.  The same can’t always be said for Electric Vehicle fires which seem to be much hotter and much more difficult to put out.

And as soon as the fire was out, the owner of the vehicle had already arranged for a flatbed tow truck to pick up the sports car.  And just like that, the only evidence left of the incident was a darkened patch of roadway.

The owner of the vehicle was happy that the incident had occurred at slow speeds.  He speculated that it could have been worse had the fire started at full highway speeds and potentially engulfing the passenger compartment with flames with insufficient time to pull over and get out of the car safely.

As the saying goes, “All’s well that ends well.”  While the vehicle is a loss, the car is insured.  The driver got out safely.  And now he’s got a great story to share for the rest of his life.
