The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners (BCC) will be meeting today. Among the agenda items is the possible expansion of the TGK facility. As you know, one of the plans favored by the County administrations includes a new facility that will have approximately 2,000 beds, 4 courtrooms, a 600 space parking garage and other offices and central support building. This will make the corner of our quiet neighborhood and a major tourist thoroughfare to the airport the county’s central prisoner intake/RELEASE center.
And despite our local opposition to this project, the powerful Miami-Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police is fully supporting this project. Here’s the memo sent from David De La Espriella, President of the Miami-Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police to his members:
Members,
Immediate Past President Daniel Junior, Director of the Miami-Dade County Corrections & Rehabilitation Department, is asking for our support tomorrow at the Board of County Commissioners meeting to replace the 60 year old pre-trial detention facility. There are many good reasons to support this project. The following are but a few of those reasons that anyone calling in their support can use to justify the approval of the project:
The replacement jail will include on-site courtrooms which can assist with Arraignments, Felony pleas, Bond reduction hearings, Violation of Probation and reduce the need to transport inmates throughout Miami-Dade County, keeping the community we serve safer.
It will provide healthier and safer work conditions for corrections staff, police officers, attorneys, lawyers, and medical staff along with improved living conditions for inmates.
A replacement jail will be the new central support hub, providing space for current MDCR administration and support staff, along with office space for the State Attorney’s Office, Public Defenders Office, and the Miami-Dade Police Department all at one location.
A replacement jail will allow for more programming space for inmates and members of the community who volunteer their time to rehabilitating inmates so that when the inmates are released, they are productive members of society and do not recommit crimes.
A replacement jail will provide for more programming space for inmate allowing MDCR to offer more rehabilitative and increasing the successful return into the community.
