We recently reported on how the illegal mural at the United Teachers of Dade headquarters was vandalized. Like we said, two wrongs don’t make a right.
We were recently able to acquire video that shows a shadowy figure approach the mural and appears to swing paint onto the mural. The video indicates the incident occurred in the early morning hours of Wednesday, September 8th, at approximately 12:45 am.
As we reported last month, the UTD placed the mural without a permit from the City of Miami Springs back in March, 2021. Then, the UTD applied for a permit in May, 2021. That permit was denied as the mural violates the city’s sign ordinance and the city’s ordinance on color palettes allowed for the business district.
Furthermore, the City of Miami Springs has in the past aggressively enforced these rules against smaller businesses. It’s only fair that if a smaller business has to remove their mural, the big and powerful UTD should be forced to comply with Miami Springs laws and remove the mural, as well. If allowed, it would create a precedent allowing any business to place a mural of their liking, regardless of whether it’s as beautiful as this one or not.
If you have information about this incident or witnessed the person leaving the scene of the crime during the morning of September 8, 2021, you are urged to contact the Miami Springs Police Department at 305.888.9711.
