On December 18, 1927, H. H. Raymond, president of the Clyde & Mallory Steamship Company, arrived in Miami to great fanfare, congratulating Miami on its recent harbor development and declaring, “Unquestionably, Miami has the finest service on the Atlantic coast in both speed and luxuriance.”

The following week, Glenn Curtiss held a special Christmas season dinner in his new Hotel Country Club in Country Club Estates (now Miami Springs Nursing and Rehab Center), honoring H. H. Raymond. Both Curtiss and Raymond were named as honorary judges in the Miami Regatta.

Clyde Mallory steamers visiting Miami in 1926 and 1927 included the SS Apache, SS Cherokee, SS Chippewa, SS Iroquois, and SS Lenape.

In 1928, streets in Country Club Estates (Miami Springs) were named after Native American tribes. We believe we have finally discovered why Miami Springs streets were named after those tribes. The photo is of the Clyde Mallory Lines SS Apache, Cherokee, Chippewa, Iroquois, and Lenape.
