After months of being closed due to construction, Canal Street was re-opened last week. Normally, Canal Street provides parking for the businesses in downtown. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, many businesses have been closed and, as you know, restaurants are currently not allowed to offer indoor dining. The reduction of business and the current pandemic recession has reduced the need for parking downtown. Nevertheless, it’s great to see this corner of the city re-opened and somewhat back to normal.
However, this isn’t the end of construction for Canal Street. Part of the coming downtown development includes replacing the parallel parking on the south side for angled parking.
No word yet on when the Canal Street redesign project will begin and if and when Canal Street will be closed again.
