Miami-Dade County Commissioner, Natalie Milian Orbis, held a Literacy Fair on the Circle this past Saturday that drew authors, families, and politicians alike. The event was held to “Celebrate Florida’s Literacy Week” with book giveaways, arts and crafts, raffles, free food, pet adoption, face painting, and bounce houses for the little ones.

Local authors were able to present their books including local VG author, and former Blessed Trinity School Teacher, Mrs. Teresa Fabano, with her book Where can I found you? Donde toe puedo encontrar?

Families were also able to adopt a pet from Miami-Dade Animal Services with a few furry friends up for adoption.

Community service groups like the Boy Scouts were also on hand to promote some of the services they provide to the community.

Miami Springs Parks and Recreation Department was also on hand sharing information about the many recreational opportunities for our community. Below you’ll notice Caitlyn Smith (center) the newly promoted Parks and Recreation Director.

The Miami Springs Police Department was also present. Don’t worry, we didn’t have a rowdy round of readers. Rather the police were present to promote community policing and engagement with the public.

Local residents came out to enjoy the cool weather and check out what the event was all about.

Political Rally?
The Literacy Fair rallied lots of top guns from the political arena to the Miami Springs Circle including:
- Miami-Dade County Commissioner:Â Natalie Milian Orbis
- Miami-Dade Tax Collector:Â Dariel Fernandez
- Miami-Dade Supervisor of Elections:Â Alina Garcia
- Miami Springs Mayor:Â Walter Fajet
- Virginia Gardens Mayor:Â Spencer Deno
- Miami Springs Councilman:Â Jorge Santin
- Miami Springs Councilman:Â Joseph Dion
- Miami Springs Councilman:Â Orlando Lamas
- Miami Springs Councilman:Â Fabian Perez Crespo
- Virgina Gardens Councilman: Gabriel Fernandez

Obviously, this is part of the game in the political world. But to Commissioner Orbis’ credit, her predecessor never did this sort of thing. Former Commissioner Cabrera left a bad impression with the Miami Springs and Virginia Gardens Community after he failed to support our bids for annexation and then pulled a last minute land swap with Miami Springs property.

Furthermore, Milian Orbis has been proactively engaging with both Virginia Gardens and Miami Springs leadership to find ways the County can support the needs of our communities.

We were very encouraged by Milian Orbis’ willingness to listen to our concerns over the number of accidents on the Circle (a County controlled road) and possible solutions to reduce accidents and keep our community safe. (We’ll keep you posted on how this progresses.)
