For the last couple of years, a group of proud local residents have been placing the American Flag along Curtiss Parkway.  It is a beautiful site to see along the glorious Curtiss Parkway bike path and a wonderful tribute during the 4th of July holiday.

Everyone I’ve spoken to loves to see this display.  It fits beautifully along our green pathway.  And the American flag means so much to so many people.  To many of the residents of Miami Springs who fled communist Cuba it means freedom.  For others it means opportunity.  For too many it means the ultimate sacrifice.

The American flag represents the land of the free and the home of the brave.

As I was enjoying the view of the beautiful American flags along Curtiss Parkway, it reminded me of one of my favorite flags in Miami Springs.  The beautiful flag shown above at the Cell Phone Tower on Hook Square.  I’m sure many of you have also enjoyed seeing Old Glory waving high from that cell phone tower.

Unfortunately, the cell tower has been without the American flag for some time now.  I know I’ve had a few residents complain to me about the cell tower and the missing flag.   Without the flag, the barren tower becomes an eye sore.  With the flag, the tower becomes a point of pride.

We don’t know why a flag that has flown for several years atop this cell phone tower has stopped flying.  We know that it’s had to be replaced from time to time as the flags do get damaged and weathered over time.  Nevertheless, we believe Old Glory should be flown again atop this tower.  It’s a symbol of freedom that can be seen far away along Okeechobee Road as you approach Miami Springs.

Plus, it should be paid for by the company that operates the tower.  And it helps to beautify our downtown area.  With new businesses (hopefully) coming to Hook Square, the Triangle Shops, and the One Curtiss Parkway Project, we should bring back the big American Flag atop the Cell Phone Tower.

THANK YOU!

We also want to take a moment to thank the local residents who have been putting up the beautiful Curtiss Parkway Flag Display.  It’s a reminder that we live with a wonderful set of neighbors that truly care about our country and our local community.  They’ve taken the time each year to volunteer and place this patriotic display for the benefit of the community.  God bless you all.  And God bless America!

The Star-Spangled Banner

O say, can you see
By the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hail’d
At the twilight’s last gleaming?
American Flags along Curtiss Parkway Bike Path

Whose broad stripes and bright stars
Through the perilous fight
O’er the ramparts we watch’d
Were so gallantly streaming
American Flags along Curtiss Parkway Bike Path

And the rocket’s red glare
The bombs bursting in air
Gave proof through the night
That our flag was still there

O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free
And the home of the brave.

  1. As long as the flag has a light shining on it at night, it doesn’t need to be brought down on a daily basis. I am probably mistaken, but I believe that the flag was one of the conditions for erecting that tower.

  2. The reason that the flag no longer flies on the cell tower is because of the power lines below. According to the company responsible for making the decision, a flag flown on a similar tower knocked out power to hundreds of homes when it came into contact with the power lines as it was raised or lowered.
