In commemoration of the events of September 11, 2001, a group of children from Miami Springs Elementary Community School paid tribute to our local police and firefighter heroes at Council Chambers on Tuesday, September 11th.┬áThe students of Mrs. Serrano and Mrs. Mejia┬ĺs classes, accompanied by several parents and new principal, Sally Hutchings, honored them with a brief ceremony, including the reading of a poem about heroes, a rendition of ┬ôGod Bless America┬ö, letters of support, and platters of sub sandwiches, a.k.a. ┬ôheroes┬ö.┬áCommunity business, Milam┬ĺs Market, made a generous donation towards the cost of the lunch.┬áThe police officers expressed their appreciation and returned the kind gesture by presenting each student with an official Miami Springs Police Department. patch.┬áThe students were more than thrilled to receive such a unique gift ┬ľ something once worn by a true hero.┬áUnfortunately, the fire department was on call during the ceremony, but Officer Sheryl Mulet, of the Community Policing Office, assured the students she would share the morning┬ĺs events and sandwiches with the firefighters.
