In commemoration of the events of September 11, 2001, a group of children from Miami Springs Elementary Community School paid tribute to our local police and firefighter heroes at Council Chambers on Tuesday, September 11th. The students of Mrs. Serrano and Mrs. Mejia’s classes, accompanied by several parents and new principal, Sally Hutchings, honored them with a brief ceremony, including the reading of a poem about heroes, a rendition of “God Bless America”, letters of support, and platters of sub sandwiches, a.k.a. “heroes”. Community business, Milam’s Market, made a generous donation towards the cost of the lunch. The police officers expressed their appreciation and returned the kind gesture by presenting each student with an official Miami Springs Police Department. patch. The students were more than thrilled to receive such a unique gift – something once worn by a true hero. Unfortunately, the fire department was on call during the ceremony, but Officer Sheryl Mulet, of the Community Policing Office, assured the students she would share the morning’s events and sandwiches with the firefighters.
