Miami Springs Senior High iTech Academy student, Harrison Gonzalez, took home 1st place during this past weekend’s competition at the Miami-Dade County Youth Fair’s ESports Smash Bros Tournament!  Dozens of students from around the county competed against each other for hours.  As each round progressed, you could hear the roar from the crowd and the cheers and jeers as some were eliminated.

As you can see in the photo above, there were tons of students participating along with plenty of spectators including family and friends enjoying the digital matches.

Ultimately, Harrison Gonzalez won 1st place and was declared the Esports Smash Bros competition Champion.  Congratulations to Harrison Gonzalez and Miami Springs Senior High iTech Academy!

It just so happened that I was at this event over the weekend.  My son was competing in a digital bridge building competition and a robotics competition.  I had never been to one of these events, but I’ve gotta tell you, they get intense.

When it came to the final round of the robotics competition, the crowd was shoulder to shoulder with some folks standing on the folding chairs to get a glimpse of the intense robotics competition.   The excitement was the equivalent of any high school sporting match with equivalent cheers and roars from the parents.  This is clearly a growing area of interest and it’s wonderful to see local students participating in these types of events.
