Here is the official list of candidates that qualified to run for Miami Springs City Council and Mayor.
MAYORAL CANDIDATES
- Bob Best (Former Councilman)
- Dr. Walter Fajet (Current Councilman & Principal at AIE Charter School)
The Mayoral Race is the heavyweight fight of this election. Bob Best has served multiple tours of duty on the City Council as a councilman and now seeks to take the Mayor’s seat. However, he’s up against Miami Springs native, active Councilman and popular principal at AIE Charter, Dr. Walter Fajet. This will be a big battle to be decided by Miami Springs voters.
Note: Since Bob Best is not currently on council, if he wins, he could serve as many as four consecutive terms or eight consecutive years. On the other hand, since Walter Fajet has been on council for three terms, he can only serve one two year term as mayor.
City Council Group I
- Jorge Santin
Councilman Jorge Santin is unopposed for City Council Group I and will retain his seat for another two years. This is further proof we don’t need to extend terms from two years to four years. If the residents like you, they’ll do it for you.

We want to congratulate Councilman Santin on his uncontested re-election to City Council Group I.
City Council Group II
- Joseph Dion
- Irma Matos
- Maryjo Mejia
Jacky Bravo is the current councilwoman on Seat II. She was going to run for re-election, but God had different plans. Councilwoman Bravo is pregnant and expecting a baby this Spring. As a result, three residents jumped into to run for this council seat.

MaryJo Mejia Ramos ran for City Council two years ago for City Council Group I which was ultimately won by Jorge Santin. Mejia remained active with local civic groups and we’re not surprised to see her running for City Council once again.
Newcomer to city politics, Joseph Dion, is also running for City Council Group II.

Irma Matos is another Miami Springs resident running for Miami Springs City Council Group II. That makes the Group II the most difficult race with three candidates vying for the same seat.
City Council Group III
- Orlando Lamas
Orlando Lamas ran two years ago against Jorge Santin and fell short of his objective to gain a seat on the City Council. However, this time around he’s got a smooth trajectory. You see, nobody ran against him. Instead, Lamas locked in the Group III seat currently held be Councilman Walter Fajet who is running for Mayor of Miami Springs.

We also want to congratulate Mr. Lamas on his uncontested campaign for City Council Group II.
City Council Group IV
- Thomas Hutchings
- Fabian Perez-Crespo
Thomas Hutchings ran for City Council Group IV against Victor Vazquez in the closest election we’ve ever seen in Miami Springs. He lost to to Vazquez by just 20 votes. After such a tight race, we knew Hutchings would be back to run again.
While Councilman Victor Vazquez announced that he wasn’t running for re-election, it doesn’t mean Hutchings will get a free ride. Miami Springs resident Fabian Perez-Crespo is also running for City Council Group IV. That means Springs residents will have to learn about the two candidates before making their choice in April.
Stay tuned as we interview the candidates before the election.
