At Monday’s Miami Springs City Council Meeting, Florida Senator and Miami Springs resident, Bryan Avila, gave the city an update on current initiatives in the Florida Senate.

They included:

  • Year round disaster preparedness
  • Elimination of sales tax on select disaster preparation items
  • No sales tax on state park admissions
  • Proposed elimination of the business rent tax
  • Spectrum Alert – Like an Amber Alert, but for missing autistic children
  • Human Trafficking Awareness – Requires all school personnel to receive human trafficking awareness training.
  • Requiring EKG Assessments for student athletes
  • New offense for pet abandonment during a storm or hurricane
  • Since 2014, Avila has been able to bring back nearly $15 Million back to Miami Springs
    • In the last 2 years, that includes:
      • $1 Million for Forrest Drive
      • $150,000 for the War Memorial on Curtiss Parkway
      • 2023:  $750,000 for the Senior Meals Program
      • 2024:  $750,000 for the Senior Meals Program
