Miami-Dade County Commissioner, Kevin Marino Cabrera, has been tapped to become the new ambassador to Panama under the incoming Trump administration.  While nationally, everyone’s talking about the current rift with Panama over the Panama Canal, we are more interested in what’s going to happen to the County Commissioner’s Seat.

As you know, Miami Springs has been attempting to annex the area west of Miami Springs since the early 2000s.  It was an item the previous Commissioner, Rebeca Sosa, staunchly supported.  However, in April of 2023, the new Commissioner, Kevin Marino Cabrera, killed attempts by Miami Springs and Virginia Gardens to annex the unincorporated area to our west.

Now that he’s been selected to serve as ambassador to Panama, it begs the question, what will happen to his seat?  According to The Miami Heraldthe Miami-Dade County Commission can choose to replace Cabrera if they don’t seek out a special election.

Among the names suggested by The Miami Herald as potential contenders for the seat was Miami Springs’ own Bryan Avila.  Of course, Avila is currently serving in the Florida Senate.

We’ll see what happens, but we hope the next Miami-Dade County Commissioner to represent Miami Springs and Virginia Gardens will be more agreeable to our needs for annexation.
