5pm Update: August 30
-
- Dorian is now a Category 3 Storm with 115mph winds
- Dorian is still forecast to make landfall as a Category 4 Storm
- Models show landfall moving further north
- This storm will likely hit somewhere between West Palm to Cape Canaveral
- The storm is moving slowly
- Even though the eye wall may not enter Florida until late Monday or early Tuesday, Tropical Storm Force winds can arrive as early as Sunday
- Miami Springs has an approximate 80% chance of seeing Tropical Storm Force winds
Models show Dorian making landfall further north in the state, but South Florida is still in the cone of concern. Remember, one little jog south (like Andrew) or a jog to the west (like Irma) make a huge difference.
When can we see the weather deteriorating?
According to the National Hurricane Center, South Florida can start seeing Tropical Storm Force winds on Sunday after 8am.
If you look at the Tropical Storm Force Wind Probability Chart, you can see that Miami Springs has an approximate 80% chance of Tropical Storm Force Winds.
There is an increasing likelihood of a prolonged period of hazardous weather conditions that could last for a couple of days in parts of Florida early next week. The risk of life-threatening storm surge along portions of the Florida east coast has increased, although it is too soon to determine where the highest storm surge will occur. The risk of devastating hurricane-force winds along the Florida east coast and peninsula early next week has also increased, although it is too soon to determine where the strongest winds will occur. Residents should have their hurricane plan in place, know if they are in a hurricane evacuation zone, and listen to advice given by local emergency officials. Regardless of the exact track of Dorian, heavy rains are expected to occur over portions of the Bahamas, Florida, and elsewhere in the southeastern United States this weekend and into the middle of next week.
