An NBC 6 report spotlighting renewed problems with the water bill from Miami Springs residents. In this case, a Miami Springs resident, Marina Gonzalez, claimed her bill jumped from a normal range of $58 – $90 to a whopping $1,087.91.
According to the report, “A limited number of new automated meters installed in the Miami Springs area contained serial numbers that did not sync with the department’s billing system. The meters provided to the department by the vendor had a nine-digit serial number and department’s billing system utilizes an eight-digit serial number. This issue prevented the information from the meters to be transmitted to the department’s billing system. Without a transmitted reading, the department’s billing system automatically calculates an estimated bill based on historical consumption for the customer’s account.”
What makes this even more aggravating is that Miami-Dade Water and Sewer appears to have been having repeated problems with Miami Springs customers.
Back in 2021, we reported one customers water bill from Miami-Dade Water and Sewer which had allegedly jumped from $49 to over $60,000. By that comparison, this reason issue is not as dramatic, but still no less serious.

I had this problem 3 years in a row. In 2017 my bill Feb/March increased $50.88 for no more than usual usage. In 2018, same period, it increased $56.90 for the month. In 2019, same period, it increased $43.72 and we were gone 14 days of that month! I had inspection for leakage (which I knew I did not have), and the meter was deemed ok. A 3 hour visit to MDWS and 2 months of calls, emails, messages did not resolve the issue. My answer was “unpaid water usage”. However they could not tell me when or how much. The resolution “pay it or water will be cut off and charged for turning it back on” so I overpaid 2017 and 2018 charges. I wrote Commissioner Rebecca Sosa in 2019 explaining in detail this problem. Immediately my bill was corrected. It appears the problem has not been. Same thing was happening in the Springs during that time also.
