The United Teachers of Dade Union headquartered in Miami Springs is fighting for its existence.

WPLG Local 10 reported on Labor Day at the Miami Springs headquarters for the UTD.  According to WPLG, a ballot was mailed to over 30,000 teachers and school employees.  The employees will have three choices:

  • Keep the UTD
  • No Union
  • New Union

Watch the report from WPLG below:

The UTD has had some local controversies in Miami Springs when they snubbed Miami Springs’ local ordinances and added a mural to the side of their building without approval from the City of Miami Springs.

Back in September of 2021, someone defaced and vandalized the unauthorized mural.

Ultimately, the City of Miami Springs buckled to the UTD after the City was threatened by legal action.  The mural remains to this day.

The UTD also has a history of partisan politics.  The president of the UTD, Karla Hernandez-Mats, ran as the Democrat candidate for Lieutenant Governor of the State of Florida back in 2022.  The UTD was also campaigning for the Biden ticket in 2020 where former president Barak Obama visited the UTD headquarters in Miami Springs.

What do you think about the UTD?  Should teachers and employees retain the UTD or should they be voted out?  Should the UTD continue its partisan ways or should it become a non-partisan representative for teachers?
